The Corn Palace in Mitchell

Our last stop, and another place you have to visit when in South Dakota, was the Corn Palace. Actually the first Corn Palace was in Sioux City, IA, but it was not successful so the people in Mitchell liked the idea, and it has become a major attraction as well as a major auditorium for sports events, concerts, graduations, etc. etc. etc. It's amazing to see and to think that they redecorate it every year with corn that they grow themselves. It was a nice finish to our mega trip.

I know. Pretty "corny."
Inside, they preserve some of the artwork, and during the tourist season, they set up a gift shop to help finance the attraction. You can see evidence of
the stage, which is shown here, and there is evidence of their basketball court with score boards and everything.
This picture shows one of the processes used for the artwork here. On the right is the design and the "paint by numbers" format, and on the left, is the finished product.
We had to get some corn snacks to get us all the way home which was about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Mitchell.
